An ordinance requiring vehicles to yield to all pedestrian on crossings in Puerto Princesa was pushed at the City Council Monday.

Councilor Victor Oliveros, the author of the proposed ordinance, told the media it has been observed that many vehicles in the city are not submitting to the stop sign that is supposed to give way to the crossing pedestrians.

“We want to give respect to those people who are crossing along within the pedestrian lane provided. Na, ‘yon na nga lang ‘yong safety nila eh, sana ay ma-observe ng ating mga kababayan,” said Oliveros.

Known as “Pedestrian Safety Ordinance”, the measure has a proposed penal provision of P500 for the first offense, P1,000 for the second, and P1,500 for the third.

Under his proposal, Oliveros said the City Traffic Management Office (CTMO) and Philippine National Police (PNP) shall collectively implement the measure.

He also added that City Engineering Office (CEO) will also be the one in-charge for the installing and maintenance of signages to make the public aware of the measure.

On the other hand, the City Information Officer (CIO) shall conduct information dissemination campaign.

“Actually huli na tayo sa ordinansa na ‘yan. There are cities, which are actually implementing this kind of measure already. So, we are just hoping na mabigyan ng halaga o importansya ‘yong pagtawid ng ating mga mamamayan doon sa pedestrian lane. This is also another way of asking our people to cross doon, gamitin ‘yong pedestrian lane,” said Oliveros.
