Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron emphasized the need of the city to have a modern structure, a more presentable public market that will answer the need of the increasing population and tourist arrival in the locality. The city formally breaks ground last November 2018 that signals the start of the project construction, and this will be completed by December 2019.

“Itong bagong palengke ay target na matapos by December (2019). Bago mag-pasko ay magkakaroon na tayo ng magandang palengke,” he said.

He explained that the project would help boost the image of Puerto Princesa City as a tourism destination, since the two existing markets are embarrassing and not physically pleasing to the tourists and the public.

Architect Ezrha Miguel, Executive Assistant IV at the City Mayor’s Office, said that 480 stalls will be set aside for wet market on the ground floor and 670 for dry goods on the second floor. The total area that will be occupied by the main building is 7,423 square meters in front of the baywalk.

The project was funded from last year’s supplemental budget of the city government.

Michie Meneses of the City Tourism Office Promotions and Marketing Division said that the project will enable tourists from the cruise ship port nearby to have an easy access to the market.

She said that it will also address the need of the city to have an orderly and attractive public market that the Puerto Princesans can be proud of.
