Malungkot na ibinahagi ni Tourism Committee Chairman Matthew Mendoza na hindi na gaya ng dati ang nakasanayang Christmas Tree Lighting sa Disyembre 1, 2020.

Sa nakalipas na mahabang panahon ay naging tradisyon na sa Puerto Princesa na kada unang araw ng Disyembre ay sama-sama ang mga taga-lungsod sa Puerto Princesa Baywalk para sa pagpapailaw ng giant Christmas Tree, hudyat ng Kapaskuhan.

“Kagabi, nabanggit sa amin ni Mayor [Lucilo Bayron] na this year ay wala munang actual o ‘yong on-site na Christmas Tree Lighting. Ito po ay isang event na kada taon, talagang hinihintay ng lahat. Talagang pati ‘yong attendance ng lahat ng mga mamamayan ay puno ang ating Baywalk every Dec. 1…pero this year, unfortunately, wala po tayong mass gathering dahil bawal pa pero nevertheless, iilaw ang Christmas Tree,” ang pahayag ni Kgd. Mendoza sa pakikipanayam sa kanya sa programang Newsroom ng Palawan Daily News kaninang umaga.

Matatandaang dahil sa COVID-19 ay mahigpit na pinagbabawalan ang pagtitipo-tipon ng mga mamamayan upang makaiwas sa pagkakahawa-hawa mula sa nasabing sakit.

Sa Lungsod ng Puerto Princesa, may mga malalaking aktibidad na rin ang nabago dahil sa pagpapatupad ng minimum health standards gaya ng Subaraw Festival na pagdiriwang sa pagkaka-hirang ng Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) bilang isa sa New7Wonders of Nature na isinagawa na lamang online.

“Sa ating celebration, talagang nakalulungkot mang sabihin pero talagang wala pa talaga tayo muna ngayon, hindi pa tayo pinapayagan. Kahit ‘yong piyesta natin [sa Dec. 8], ay mag-celebrate na lang tayo ng kanya-kanya muna. May mga online programs naman tayo na pwedeng panoorin habang sila ay nagsi-celebrate,” ayon pa kay City Councilor Mendoza.
