Arnis is a form of martial arts designed for self-defense. It was developed by the indigenous populations of the Philippines, and it’s an assorted range of weaponry for combat.  In 2009 the government of the Philippines declared Arnis to be the martial art and national sport of the country.

Arnis also known as Kali or Eskrima, refers to a category of Filipino martial arts that emphasizes the use of weapons-whether it’s fighting sticks, blades or improvised weapons. In Arnis the weapons are used as an extension of the body, body movement techniques are basic to the sport.

People of all ages can practice Arnis to become physically strong and be active, and to have self-control. Arnis can make friends, develop the word self-discipline and compete fair and honorable.

The Arnis Team of Puerto Princesa struggle to train in order to be competitive in this sports, the only training venue they have is the open field area of Palawan Sports Complex. But when rainy season comes it is hard for them to train well as there is no other option to the venue of training since the complex is the most accessible to all the players. This is a challenge for the team in the past years.

Last January 25-26, the Arnis Team of the City got 3 golds, 4 silvers, and 3 bronze during the 2020 Dinagyang Bastonero 2nd Zubiri Cup National Invitational Tournament in Iloilo City, and they proved that lack of training facility is not a hindrance to win and achieve their goal.

Even though they did not win the championship slot, the PPC Arnis Team came home full of knowledge and experience. They learned how to get along and fight fairly with the whole heart, and accept victory and defeat.

Coach and trainer Mr. Olegario Crujedo (Lakan) (President of Matti-PPC) Arnis trainer City Sports Office is the head of this team together with Coach Jenny Renelynne Jacinto.

Our Bastoneros need all the support they can get. They need to continue attending invitational seminars to get updated about all the new rules, styles and techniques.

Their exposure is a concern in order to win more medals from any national or higher level games such as MIMAROPA, Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games as this will boost their confidence more and attract people especially the young ones to get into the sports.

I guarantee you that our young Arnistador or Bastoneros are fighting wholeheartedly in every battle they are in. And your support to this team will serve an inspiration in order for them to give honor and bring pride to Puerto Princesa.
