The midterm elections next year will once again reckon a political sight that could either be dirty, harsh or bloody, depending on how we would describe it. Family members even fight against each other just to be in power – a very macabre scenario that we do not wish to experience, but indeed happening all these years.
Feels like in theatrical move, where us, ordinary citizens watch as spectators and these politicians as actors in a ghoulish scenario. Glued in our seats, it seemed like we cannot do anything else but just to watch them unfold their acts. Seemingly, like spectators paid to watch them.
To exercise our right of suffrage is to vote for the candidate that we want, freely, voluntarily without harassment, political machineries and vote buying mechanisms. It is our constitutional duty to participate in the electoral process and to choose the individuals who we know can lead and improve the way we live.
As voters, do we really follow our conscience and choose the right ones? Or simply allow ourselves to be bought by money?
Couple days ago, political wannabes and incumbent personalities filed their Certificate of Candidacy in the COMELEC offices nationwide. The filing of the COC was a grand entrance to most of the candidates, with others being flocked by their supporters who rally behind them in their quest for position.
As young as 33 years old filed for the senatorial race while the oldest is the nearly centenarian former senator Juan Ponce Enrile. The COMELEC has yet to weed-out nuisance candidates out of the 152 aspirants for the senatorial race.
Netizens were quick to react online after seeing politicians that have corruption cases can still file and run for government posts. What could have been the greatest blunder to most of us could slap us with hard reality that only those who have the power, machinery and money can rule. But then again, this is the time for us to put pressure ourselves and follow our conscience. We are not dispensable that can easily be bought by monetary gains. The political landscape is fast changing.
There is no permanence in the way it operates. It could either be political friends becoming political nemesis. The dirtiness of politics will always be there. It seemed as if we are losing the real politicians who have the truest passion and ambition for the interests of the people. But then again, we should continue to take part in choosing the ones who we know are untarnished with no pending cases and have clean slate of track record both professionally and as an individual.
Let’s cross the bridge when we get there on the very day when we cast our ballots. And don’t forget to vote wisely!
