The traditional “Love Affair with Nature” (LAWN) activities for February 14 this year targets to plant some 7,000 mangroves seedlings in Bucana, Barangay Ihawig.
The event is Puerto Princesa City’s way of celebrating Valentine’s Day by expressing its affection to the environment in addressing climate change issues. City Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron is expected to administer the wedding of more than 100 couples.
Zorina C. Arellano, Senior Environmental Management Specialist (SEMS) of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO), said that the working committees are already preparing for the event, which they prepared an estimated 7,000 seedlings for the activity.
She added that some 400 seedlings are reserved for the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa (AVPP), which priests and nuns will plant 400 mangrove seedlings as part of the year-long celebration of 400 years of Christianity in Palawan that kicked off in August 2022.
Atty. Carlo B. Gomez, City Environment and Natural Resources Officer, urged the public to support various environmental endeavor in the city. He said that participating in LAWN and other environmental activities will enable groups and individuals to help the City Government to improve, protect and conserve the natural wonders like our coastal areas.
In September 2005, the City Government of Puerto Princesa enacted the City Ordinance No 287 declaring February 14 as Love Affair with Nature (LAWN) Day in the city of Puerto Princesa. This is aimed at expressing of not only romantic love but also love for Mother Nature and as a continuing call for the protection and sustainable use of natural resources. Mangrove planting and mass weddings have been conducted simultaneously since then.
Mangroves are important because of its significant roles in our ecosystem.
For centuries, mangrove systems have contributed significantly through their provision of a wide array of goods and services. They are also important in fisheries with higher-valued fish, crustaceans, and mollusks which they significantly fortify. Moreover, mangroves are not only considered a source of essential goods, but they also offer many ecosystem services including coastal protection that serves as buffer zones during typhoons and storm surges, reduction of shoreline and riverbank erosion, flood control, nutrient recycling, and habitat for wildlife.
