Post-pandemic business woman, inspires young entrepreneurs

Palaweña business owner of Ryker’s Wholesale Clothing Store, Ceciel Manaay Marindueque, is a single mom of a 4 year old kid. She is also the eldest out of 4 siblings and stands as the breadwinner of her family because her father passed away and her mother is a stay in mom.

According to Ceciel, her family is what inspires and motivates her to do her best in what she does every day.

“Minsan hindi na ako natutulog na kasi kailangan kong kumita. Pinilit ko ‘yung sarili ko na kailangan within the day ma-hit ko ito [target sales] kasi ‘pag hindi maghihirap kami. Hindi kami kakain ‘yung parang gano’n. Minind set ko na siya na gano’n para ‘yung drive ko na trabahuhin ‘yun nandoon. Kailangan talaga. Gano’n talaga everytime na may gagawin ako laging sila talaga ‘yun kasi pag hindi siguro ganun, siguro hindi rin ako gano’n magtrabaho.”

She had a travel agency business pre-pandemic period but was forced to close it because of the lockdown that happened last year which stopped the tourists from coming into the province of Palawan.

“Nung pumasok ‘yung 2020 talaga sinabi ko sa [sarili] ko na kailangan ko talagang maghanap ng ibang business… Actually nag-bu-business naman talaga ako. Isa siyang ticketing with travel and tours tapos during pandemic medyo nag-stop ako kasi nga ‘di ba nag-lock down nga yung [Palawan]. Nalugi ako actually doon kasi ‘di ba ‘yung refund natin sa airlines so ‘yun.”

“Ang sabi ko no’ng una ‘kahit extra income lang’. pero hindi eh parang nalalagpasan niya na ‘yung…extra income lang [dahil] tumaas talaga ‘yung sale niya. Actually siya ‘yung naging ano ko na ‘okay lang kahit pandemic kasi kumikita ako ng doluble kasi may trabaho din ako sa government tapos plus ito kaya medyo nasurvive talaga yung buong taon nung 2020.”

When she shared her intention of opening a clothing store, a lot of her friends discouraged her because it is in the midst of pandemic and people won’t have the money to spend on clothing but this did not stop her from pursuing what she wanted to do and so she researched and made a solid plan in case it fails.

“Noong una kasi, maraming nagsasabi sa akin na mga friends ko na pagclothing, pandemic ngayon, hindi ‘yan siya mabenta. Kasi siyempre walang pera ‘yung ibibili ng clothes. Sabi niya ‘ibili nalang ng pagkain yun’ parang ganun pero ako kasi malakas ‘yung loob ko lalo na paggustong gusto ko ‘yan, pinu-pursue ko tsaka before ko naman ‘yan i-pursue, pinag-iisipan ko ‘yan at may planning ako bago ko ‘yun gawin kasi mahirap talagang malugi.”

She has laid down her back up plans in case it doesn’t work.

“Yun din yung tiningnan ko na isa [pang option na]…kung hindi man ito kumita ng walk-in at online, puwede naman itong i-live [selling]. May option na yun [kung hindi mabenta yung mga items].”

“Nung nag-lockdown, naranasan ko yun eh, ang hirap. Tapos marami akong pinapa-aral [at] ang sabi ko hindi puwedeng ganun kasi single mom din ako…[at] ako ‘yung inaasahan ng buong pamilya tapos yun naisip ko yung…mag-business ako nito.”

“…nung nag-opening ako nung December nagulat sila kasi maghapon talaga sobrang andami talagang tao [doon sa main store].”

Moreover, her business is not the only source of income as it would not be sufficient for their daily expenditures because she is also currently sponsoring the education of five (5) family members.

“Kasi kung sa sweldo ko [lang]…baka hindi siya kumasya… Nakatira sa akin ‘yung kapatid ko, pamangkin at saka pinsan [ko]. Ako rin ‘yung nagpapa-aral doon kaya nga [ang] sabi ko ‘di puwedeng wala akong business kasi doon ko siya kinukuha para pang provide sa kanila.”

She also shared that she started with the most affordable ‘package’ the company supplying her products was offering. She did not expect that it will be successful on the day of opening itself which also became her motivation to continue what she started until it became a mini warehouse.

“Sa maliit kasi ako kumita. Wala naman akong ganun kalaking pera… Nagstart ako dati ng 30 pieces lang, nasa P5,600. Free shipping kasi lahat ng bundle [at] mga packages kaya maganda talaga siya ipang-startup.”

“…nag-start ako ng July tapos hindi ko akalain na gano’n kabilis yung transition niya kasi ang hirap magpa-stable ng business lalo na ‘pag hindi ka seryoso, hindi makikilala agad. Kaya sabi ko ‘hala ibig sabihin indemand talaga siya dito’ kasi hindi naman siya magiging stable kung hindi.”

“Nung naubos yung 30 pieces [na unang order], isang araw lang ‘yon naubos siya kaya sabi ko no’ng una ‘ito na talaga ‘yung gusto kong business’. Nung sumunod talagang nag[pursige na ako] kasi mayroon silang packages na P25k ‘yun talagang pang supplier [kasi] marami siyang benefits din eh; may free registration na siya ng DTI permit, may training siya every Sunday with CEO na itinuturo sayo yung boosting ng lahat about business na ‘yung akala mo hindi na hindi puwede, puwede pala ‘yung gano’n. Tapos mayroong freebies, marami at saka ‘yung nagustuhan ko doon ay puwede ka magpapalit ng non-moving item. Ibig sabihin kung hindi mo ito nabenta, basta hindi siya sira, [ay]…papadala mo sa kanila at…puwedeng papalitan.”

When she found the business to be successful, she strived to continue it until it became to where it is now.

“Tinuloy-tuloy ko na talaga siya kasi naging mini warehouse siya dito sa Palawan. In-open ko siya no’ng December 8, mga last month ng 2020. Sinali ko siya sa mga bazaar like ganito [sa Stellar Bazaar Festival] … okay naman…’yung kita niya [at] di ko rin naman pinagsisihan.”

She expressed her gratitude to God and her regular customers during the interview as her physical store is quite far but people still travel to go there just to shop.

“Thank you nga ako doon kay Lord na kahit ang layo ng Bancao-Bancao…pupuntahan mo eh sasadyain mo siya pero marami siya [customers] every day. Atsaka doon na rin pumupunta ‘yung mga taga munisipyo…kaya natutuwa ako… Sinabi ko na ‘puwede ipa-ship po’ pero [sabi ng mga customers] ‘hindi ma’am puntahan nalang namin para makapili kami’. Basta bundle [ay] free shipping talaga ‘yun.”

When asked about her future plans, she said she wants to open another physical store somewhere in the business district and also to become the Satellite in the whole province.

“Nakasama siya sa plan ko [na mag-expand ng business] basta nag-stable na ‘yung sitwasyon natin [economically]… kasi pang long term siya, kinuhaan ko na siya ng permit.”

“Sa akin, pinapangarap ko kasi maging satellite ng company dito sa [lungsod ng] Puerto at sa Palawan para lahat [ng orders ay] ako na mag-pro-provide at saka syempre ‘yung capital no’n hindi siya biro kaya ‘yun ‘yung pinag-iipunan ko. ‘Yun ‘yung long term [plan] ko… baka within 1 year [or] 1 and a half [year] gano’n ‘yung sa plano ko. Matagal na nga ‘yung ganun eh kasi malakas naman talaga siya.”

And her advice to those who wants to startup their own business is as long as the person makes time and works hard then it will be successful.

“Ang advice ko lang sa kanila [ay] seryosohin lang nila [ang pagnenegosyo]… kasi marami na akong resellers eh at kumikita talaga…’yung masipag lang talaga… May mga young entrepreneurs akong mga bata na nasa within 12 pero lahat sila kumikita kasi tinuro ko talaga yung papaano i-market yung [business] nila. Yung [social media] page nila hindi gano’n karami yung likers hindi siya tulad ng ibang page na maraming likes. Bumibilib ako sa kanila kasi konting-konti talaga ‘yung like ng page nila pero yung kita nila sobra kasi sila halos nakakaubos ng stocks ko sa shop.  Kaya natutuwa ako na hindi lang ako yung kumikita, pati sila.”
