The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) admitted that prices of canned goods and other basic and prime commodities have increased again. As of July 13 to August 3, canned goods such as beef loaf, canned milk and others increased up to P1.00 to P2.00 per item.
Other canned goods and basic commodities such as sardines also increased up to P2.00 from its actual Suggested Retail Price (SRP). The DTI said that according to Century Pacific Food, Inc., the price of its canned sardines increased due to hike in the cost of tamban fish, tin cans, carton and labor costs.
The prices of canned meat and beef increased due to significant increase on the cost of imported raw meat and packaging materials.
The DTI also explained in their price analysis that meat supplies are affected by the Bird Flu phenomenon in Europe while packaging material cost hiked up due to stricter pollution regulations in China.
Increase on canned milk’s prices is also due to cost of major raw materials and its packaging materials. Ordinary people like Mr. Jeffrey Guialon of Puerto Princesa said that price increases on almost all of the necessities would make it hard for people to fight for survival. “Ang hirap na pataas na pataas ang presyo ng bilihin ngayon, ang hirap ng buhay,” said Mr. Guialon.
He said that the price hike of basic necessities should be taken as a motivation to work hard every day and to survive to live.
“Syempre kung pamahal nang pamahal ang bilihin, dapat mas masipag ka mag trabaho, kailangan mo mabuhay eh,” said Mr. Guialon.
