Hindi ginto, droga, o cash ang karaniwang laman ng mga pinaghihinalaang smuggler sa paliparan ng Mumbai nitong linggo. Sa halip, natuklasan ng mga awtoridad ang nakamamatay na dose-dosenang makamandag na ahas, na itinago sa loob ng checked-in baggage ng isang pasaherong galing Thailand.

Sa inilabas na pahayag ng Mumbai Customs noong Linggo ng gabi, kinumpirma ng mga opisyal ang pagkakahuli sa isang Indian national na may dalang 44 Indonesian pit vipers, 3 Spider-tailed horned vipers, at 5 Asian leaf turtles. Lahat ng ito ay nakumpiska mula sa isang flight galing Bangkok patungong Mumbai.

Bagamat karaniwan na ang pagkakasamsam ng mga kontrabando tulad ng ginto, cannabis, at cocaine mula sa mga pasahero sa paliparan, itinuturing ng mga opisyal ang insidente bilang isang “high-risk biosecurity breach.” Inilabas rin ng customs ang mga larawan ng makukulay at makamandag na ahas—kabilang ang asul at dilaw na pit vipers—na kinunan habang kumakawag sa isang timba matapos masamsam.

Ayon sa mga eksperto, ang mga hayop tulad ng Spider-tailed horned viper ay bihirang makita sa ilegal na wildlife trade, at kadalasang target nito ay maliliit na hayop tulad ng ibon. Ngunit ang pagdadala nito sa komersyal na airline ay nagpapakita ng mas matapang at sistematikong operasyon ng mga wildlife smugglers sa Southeast Asia.

Hindi pinangalanan ang suspek, ngunit kasalukuyan siyang nasa kustodiya ng mga awtoridad at sasampahan ng kasong paglabag sa mga batas ukol sa wildlife trafficking at biosecurity ng India.

Ang nasabing insidente ay hindi rin unang pagkakataon na ginamit ang Mumbai bilang entry point ng exotic wildlife mula Southeast Asia. Nitong Pebrero, limang endangered Siamang gibbons ang natuklasang isinilid sa isang plastic crate sa loob ng trolley bag ng isa ring pasaherong mula Thailand.
Noon namang Nobyembre, labingdalawang pagong at apat na ibong hornbill ang nasabat mula sa ibang pasahero, habang noong Setyembre ay nahuli rin ang dalawang pasahero na may bitbit na limang batang caiman—isang uri ng reptile mula sa pamilya ng alligator.

Patuloy na binabantayan ng mga awtoridad ang lumalalang problema sa wildlife smuggling, lalo na sa mga rutang galing Thailand patungong India. Ayon sa ilang opisyal, may pattern nang nabubuo—isang underground network na tila ginagamit ang mga hayop bilang bagong uri ng kontrabando.
Habang ang mga hayop ay kasalukuyang nasa pangangalaga ng environmental officers, patuloy na iniimbestigahan kung sino ang nasa likod ng mas malawak na sindikato ng ilegal na kalakalan ng wildlife sa rehiyon.
