There is no scientific evidence that ‘tuob’ or steam therapy can cure patients or individuals having coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Department of Health (DOH) said Thursday, June 25.

DOH Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire highlighted that medical societies including the World Health Organization (WHO) are not suggesting nor recommending the use of this method to cure or prevent the disease.

The use of steam therapy can thin thick mucus, however, in the case of COVID-19, there are still no scientific studies that could prove it is beneficial.

According to the Spanish Pediatrics Association, “It is apparent that regardless of how SIT [Steam Inhalation Therapy] is applied it carries a risk of burn injury. The usual technique of covering the head with a towel over a pan filled with hot water is dangerous due to the steam, the hot liquid, or even potential contact with the container. ”

DOH advises everyone to continue wash hands regularly, use of alcohol and sanitizer, wear mask while in public spaces and maintain social distancing. Through these, the risk of transmission of the virus will be lessened.
