The National Irrigation Administration (NIA)- Palawan Irrigation Management Office (PIMO) completed the P30-Million irrigation facility which is an extension of the existing Lucbuan Communal Irrigation System (CIS) in Puerto Princesa City in an effort to irrigate ricefields in the area and boost rice production in the city.

The project is now operational and can irrigate a total of 82 hectares of rice land in Brgy. Maruyugon and Lucbuan in the city of Puerto Princesa.

The NIA announced that under the leadership of NIA Administrator Ricardo R. Visaya, NIA PIMO has successfully completed the P30-million extension of Lucbuan CIS last June 15, 2020 in Bgy. Lucbuan amid on-going outbreak.

“The extension of Lubuan CIS is comprised of completed terruvian diversion works attached to a completed 14-inches High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe with 2.46 km length and 20 meters canal lining. It is designed to prevent typical issues such as leakage and breakage that can reach a potential lifespan of 50 years and above,” NIA said in a statement.

NIA assured that the Terruvian Intake dam for Lucbuan SIP is designed to be typhoon resistant has complied with the basic construction methodology and monolithic approach of canal construction for an adequate result of the irrigation project in Palawan.

Lucbuan CIS project has the longest HDPE pipe installed by Palawan IMO with paramount PE gravity traversing Maranreg river to irrigate the service area of rice land and can help generate better income and livelihood for 73 farmer-beneficiaries of Bgy. Lucbuan at present.

“Due to high demand of food caused by the pandemic, Palawan IMO is now also working for 2020 extension project of Lucbuan CIS for an additional canal lining to commence this year using the agency’s savings amounting to P-5 million. Once completed, an additional 20 hectares of land can catch up for irrigation before the year ends,” the NIA said.
