A live pangolin was successfully rescued from an abandoned house on Saturday, June 22, in Barangay Culandanum, Bataraza, Palawan.

The operation was led by the 2nd Special Operations Unit Maritime Group (2nd SOU-MG) and the Quezon Maritime Special Boat Crew (Quezon MSBC), under the supervision of PEMS Richard P. Rodriguez and PLTCOL Leopoldo M. Ferrer Jr.

Acting on a tip from a concerned citizen, the rescue team found the pangolin in a state of distress. Weighing 7.5 kilograms and measuring 50 centimeters in width, the critically endangered animal was secured and is now in the care of the Quezon MSBC.

It will be handed over to the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) for further rehabilitation and eventual release into the wild.

This operation highlights the Philippine National Police Maritime Group‘s dedication to wildlife conservation, particularly for species threatened by illegal trade.

The successful rescue reflects ongoing efforts to combat wildlife trafficking and protect biodiversity in the region.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the pangolin’s presence in the abandoned house, with potential charges for violations of the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (R.A. 9147).
