A supplementary feeding program for children in the towns of Roxas and San Vicente has been successfully held for the past weeks through the initiative of the Provincial Nutrition Office and Municipal Nutrition Office.
The feeding program in Roxas was also made possible through volunteers coming from the Philippine Red Cross-Palawan Chapter while Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) volunteers reach out their hands to help feed children in the town of San Vicente.
According to Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) Rachel Paladan, the supplementary feeding which was held in both towns is under the nutrition in emergency program of the Provincial Government of Palawan while recovery procedures in local government units (LGUs) badly hit by typhoon Odette is still on-going.
“Part pa rin ito ng initiatives natin ng nutrition program katuwang ang ating private sectors [CBNC] at civic organizations [Red Cross] from victims ng bagyo last year. Although nakikita naman natin [na] so far, continue ‘yung recovery ng Roxas especially at San Vicente. Need lang talaga natin ma-secure siyempre ‘yung health and nutrition ng mga bata lalo na hindi pa stable ang status ng family when it comes to livelihood,” said Paladan.
Meanwhile, aside from the supplementary feeding, other activities and programs are being done by the Provincial Nutrition Office in coordination with different municipalities.
This includes the detection of malnutrition active case in different areas or finding Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) at Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) cases, as well as an assessment concerning the nutritional status of children under 6-59 months.
The Department of Health (DOH)-Palawan, on the other hand, distributed micronutrient supplements for children to help them boost their appetites.
For pregnant mothers and stay-at-home moms, a nutrition education and information campaign through the Mother’s Class program is still being done to ensure that the first 1,000 days of a child should equip them with the right amount of nutrition to prevent them from getting sick as derived from the mission program of the National Nutrition Council (NNC).
