Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. People celebrate their love for their special someone on February 14, giving heart-shaped decadent chocolates, bouquets of vibrant red roses, and arguably cheesy cards.
It is said to be one of the most special days for couples. But if you look outside the box, it’s just a vastly profitable holiday marketed by businesses to give you an excuse to stuff your face with chocolates and spend all your money on useless flowers and jewelries.
You may have heard the saying that “Love doesn’t cost a thing” but why on Valentine’s Day, the day where people celebrate love and compassion, is a day where all people go extra and buy luxurious gifts to please their lovers? Is that the real cost of love? If you truly care about someone, then one god-awful day of the year isn’t the only time you show it.
The holiday is only worsened because the expectation falls on the guy’s side. This is their time to impress their girlfriends or lovers. It’s a girl’s second birthday as they are lavished with presents, fancy dinners and flowers and even the occasional eat out.
It transforms guys into Prince Charming for the day because society pressures us into believing this is the only right thing to do. Surely, we’ve all felt love early on, but we soon realized the hype doesn’t last as chocolates will expire and roses will eventually die. Valentine’s Day is a holiday of negative space, something we wish we could spend with someone else or no one at all.
Fidelity is achieved through hard-work, so it’s just easier to pretend the one day of the year. I’m sure some of you are thinking I just don’t like Valentine’s Day because I’m single or something like that which isn’t the case.
I’m not single, and I can’t remember the last time I was single on Valentine’s Day. I just don’t think someone should confess their love to me on a day that the rest of the world is doing it on. This year, don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day when everyone else does. Don’t buy the same gifts as everyone else. You should make your significant other feel loved some other day instead of when society says you should.
