The Philippines celebrates its Independence Day on June 12, 1898. It was when the Philippine flag was first raised in Kawit, Cavite, and the first public playing of the Philippine National Anthem. Every year on June 12, a national holiday was observed to commemorate the Philippine history, nationalism, culture and tradition, and above all, its sovereignty.

The Philippine flag, on the other hand, has a distinct historical representation that symbolizes patriotism, sense of nationhood, and embodies the aspirations and sentiments of the Filipino people in their unceasing quest for independence.

Meanwhile, music has always been part of the life of every Filipino. In fact, it is intrinsically linked to our cultural identity. It has the power to alter an individual’s mood, change perceptions or even bring the patriotic inner self.  That’s why in celebration of the 124th Philippine Independence Day, the Tactical Operations Wing West, Philippine Air Force under the instruction of Western Command participated in the Peace Advocacy Concert dubbed as “Musika Para sa Kalayaan” which was held on June 12, 2022 at SM Puerto Princesa.

The said event was highlighted by the live performances of our very own military bands- WESCOM Band and the TOW West Combo. To emphasize the value and honor for this year’s celebration of Philippine Independence Day, both bands rendered different Original Pinoy Music or OPM and Makabayan songs to uplift the nationalism and patriotism among the Palaweños.

As we look back on the days leading to Independence Day, may we remember our heroes who fought against Spanish rule who lead the Philippine revolution, and who inspired their writings on nationalism. Moreover, let us continually promote our distinct culture by supporting our original Filipino Music. This day, let us not forget the great struggle of freedom, and let the patriotism instilled in our hearts remain as we celebrate the Philippine Independence. Mabuhay!
