The World Day for Health and Safety free webinar held on April 26, 2024 offered valuable insights and practical strategies for promoting a safe and healthy work environment said Architect Kent N. Janaban, the CEO and President of Petrosphere Incorporated.

Workplace safety and health are fundamental rights for every worker. However, accidents, injuries and illnesses still occur, highlighting the need for continuous efforts to improve safety measures and promote a resilient working environment.

The first speaker, Engr. Harthwell C. Capistrano, MSEM, EdD, Occupational Safety and Health Consultant, discussed “Why do accidents still occur in the workplace?” Engr. Capistrano, in his presentation, showed that accidents continue to occur in the workplace due to a variety of factors. One reason is the lack of proper safety protocols and training. Without comprehensive training programs, employees may not be aware of potential hazards or how to mitigate them.

“Additionally, inadequate supervision and enforcement of safety regulations can contribute to accidents. Another factor is complacency, where workers become accustomed to their tasks and overlook potential risks. Finally, external factors such as faulty equipment or infrastructure can also lead to accidents, it is crucial to prioritize safety, provide ongoing training, enforce regulations, and regularly assess and improve safety measures.”

“Promoting a generative safety culture to foster a workplace where safety is everyone responsibility. Encourage open communication, continuous learning, and proactive hazard. Identification to create a safer and more productive environment,” Engr. Capistrano added.

The second speaker, Engr. Jose Maria S. Batino, Executive Director of Department of Labor and Employment DOLE – Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC), discussed the National Occupational Safety and Health Profile. Engr. Batino shared updates of OSHC programs and activities and the theme of 2024 World Day for Safety and Health celebration, which promotes climate change at safety and health at work.

“Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate is crucial for the well-being of employees and the sustainability of businesses”, Engr. Batino said.

“As climate change brings about more frequent and severe weather events, such as heatwaves, storms and floods, workplaces must adapt to protect their workers. This includes implementing measures to prevent heat related illnesses, providing adequate ventilation and cooling systems, and establishing emergency protocols for extreme weather events. Additionally, employers should promote awareness and education on climate-related risks and encourage sustainable practices to mitigate the impact of climate change. By prioritizing the safety and health of employees in a changing climate, businesses can create a resilient and sustainable work environment for all,” he shared.

The third to speak was Mr. Greg Naldo, a licensed psychologist and psychometrician specializing in Clinical Psychology. Mr. Naldo shared invaluable insights and expert ideas on the topic of self-care at workplace.

Self-care at the workplace is essential for maintaining overall well-being and productivity. Taking breaks, practicing mindfulness, setting boundaries, and prioritizing physical and mental health are crucial. By investing in self-care, individuals can reduce stress, improve focus, and create a healthier work-life balance.
