Former President Benigno Aquino III dies at 61

Benigno Simeon Cojuangco Aquino III, also known as PNoy and Noynoy, was the 15th president of the Philippines serving from 2010 to 2016. He also served as the chairman of the Liberal Party of the Philippines.

Born on February 8, 1960, he was the only son and third child of former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino.

He earned a degree of Bachelor of Arts Major in Economics at Ateneo de Manila University in 1981, and became a senator from 2007-2010.

During his senatorial term, he passed bills such as The Budget Impoundment and Control Act, which controlled the release of funds for the Congress of the Philippines, and the Preservation of Public Infrastructures bill, which seek to raise the standard of public infrastructures and penalize contractors of defective structures.

During his presidency, he pushed the K-12 program, standardizing the curriculum and education system in the country. He passed a program called PPP (Plant, Plan, Plan) which are contractual agreement between the government and private firms to collaborate on building, financing, designing, implementing, and operating infrastructure facilities and services that were traditionally provided by the government. Among these infrastructures are expressways, classrooms and automatic fare collection systems.

Former President Benigno Aquino III died Thursday morning, June 24, 2021, he was 61 years old.
