In recognition of the important role that farmers and fisherfolk play in ensuring the food security of the island province of Palawan, the municipality of Taytay celebrated the Farmers and Fisherfolk Day with a series of events that highlighted the contribution of these vital groups to the local economy and food supply.
The event was held at Sitio Igang, Barangay Poblacion on Tuesday, May 16, with a theme, “Masaganang Agrikultura, Maunlad na Demokrasya.”
The event kicked-off with a short program followed by the inauguration of the newly renovated Taytay-Rural Agricultural Center (RAC), a facility dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture practices and providing support for local farmers and fisherfolk.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by provincial and local government officials, representatives from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), Taytay Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO), members of the farming and fishing communities, and representatives from various agricultural organizations.
Some lectures on sustainable agriculture practices were given and were focused on the importance of protecting the environment while maintaining a productive and sustainable farming and fishing industry.
Experts spoke about the importance of responsible land use, the use of organic fertilizers, and reducing the use of harmful chemicals in farming and fishing practices.
The OPA also distributed farming and fishing equipment to beneficiaries of Food Always In The Home (FAITH) to support their livelihoods and promote sustainable practices.
The farming equipment distributed included garden tools, sprayers, seedling trays, sprinklers, and plows. The fishing equipment included fishing nets, seaweed materials, and traps, among others.
In his speech, Palawan Governor Victorino Dennis Socrates emphasized the importance of supporting local farmers and fisher folk in promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
He highlighted the role of the local farmers and fisher folk in achieving these goals, stating that they are the main reason why food security has never been a problem in the province.
“Alam ko ang halaga ng sektor ng agrikultura, magugutok ang sambayanan kung wala kayo. Ngayong pabangonbang ating ekonomiya, kailangan talaga at nakikita ko rin na dapat palakasin ang sektor ng mga magsasaka at mangingisda,” Socrates said.
