Alexis Gervacio Sumbe, a 24-year-old resident of Barangay Tumarbong, Roxas, Palawan, secured the fifth spot in the October 2023 Licensure Examination for Fisheries Professionals.

Alexis, one of three children of fishermen Mylene and Alexander Sumbe, draws inspiration from her family’s resilience amid financial challenges.

Expressing her determination, she stated, “Graduating is my way of giving back their sacrifices.”

Out of 2,123 exam takers, 716 passed, and Alexis distinguished herself with an impressive 85.50% average.

In a home without touchscreen phones and limited internet access, the Sumbe family learned of Alexis’s achievement through their youngest daughter, informed by a professor at Western Palawan University about her sister’s 5th place ranking.

Upon discovering the news, the family, including Alexis, who was initially unaware of her success, celebrated with tears of joy and triumph.
