DOH: 7 out of 10 positive COVID-19 patients are carriers of the Delta variant

The Department of Health (DOH) announced on Sunday, August 29, that 7 out of 10 COVID-19 positive cases are carriers of the highly infectious Delta variant.

According to the latest report of the DOH, 516 or 69% of the 748 random samples were Delta variants. Of this number, 473 are local cases, and 31 are Returning Overseas Filipinos (ROF). The remaining 12 cases are currently being verified if they are local or from overseas.

Health authorities added that 90% of the COVID-19 random samples that underwent sequencing in the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) were found to contain Alpha and Beta variants, which remains to be the most common COVID-19 variants in the country.

“While the total Alpha and Beta variant cases remain the highest in the country, there is a continuous and increasing detection of the Delta variant in the communities,” DOH said.

As of today, there are 114 cases in the National Capital Region; 79 cases in Calabarzon; 64 cases in Central Luzon; 48 cases in Northern Mindanao; 32 cases in Cagayan Valley; 24 cases in Ilocos Region; 23 cases in Central Visayas; 22 cases in Davao Region; 20 cases in MIMAROPA; 16 cases in Bicol Region; 13 cases – Western Visayas; 12 cases in Zamboanga Peninsula; and 6 cases in Cordillera Administrative Region

The DOH also said that 6 of the Delta cases are currently active, 5 have died, and 505 cases have been tagged as recovered. And “all other details are being validated by the regional and local health offices.”

Meanwhile, DOH has logged a total of 1,789 Delta cases; 2,395 Alpha variant cases; 2,669 Beta variant cases; 2 cases of Gamma variant; 429 of P.3; and 1 Lambda variant.
