In a recent statement addressed to the public, the elders and religious leaders of the El Nido community have reiterated the importance of modesty in line with the Cuyunon tradition and the values upheld by religious institutions across Palawan.
The elders have kindly requested that visitors refrain from walking around the town in their swimming suits and trunks. This reminder, however, does not extend to beaches and islands where such attire is appropriate. Instead, it applies specifically to the town areas where locals and tourists mingle.
Under Municipal Ordinance No. 011, tourists are prohibited from “walking in any street in El Nido wearing swimsuit or swimming trunks,” as stated in a tourist reminder posted on the El Nido Tourism Facebook page.
The ordinance aims to “protect the culture and religious values in the community,” emphasizing the importance of respecting local customs and traditions.
This reminder is not a new request but has been reinforced by the provisions set forth in the updated Tourism Code of 2019.
By dressing modestly in town areas, visitors not only show their appreciation for the local heritage but also contribute to the harmonious coexistence between locals and tourists.
