The Kalayaan-Spratly Island is embarking on the establishment of its inaugural modern Sewage Treatment Plant.
This development, initiated on September 19, marks a huge step toward safeguarding the natural environment of the island.
Former Palawan Water Program Director Engr. Michelle Cardenas, in collaboration with Engr. John Gil Ynzon, the Officer-in-Charge of the Provincial Economic Enterprise Development Office and current Program Manager of Palawan Water Office, conducted a joint ocular inspection on the island.
This inspection signals the commencement of the construction phase for the much-anticipated sewage treatment facility.
The primary objective of this project is to effectively eliminate contaminants from sewage, ensuring that the effluent produced meets the required environmental standards for discharge into the surrounding ecosystem or for potential reuse.
By doing so, it will play a vital role in preventing water pollution resulting from the discharge of untreated sewage.
Anticipated to commence construction later this year, the first phase of the Sewage Treatment Plant is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2024.
This initial phase will cover a substantial land area of 12,000 square meters within the island municipality.
