Low-pressure area to bring rains over palawan before dissipating, pagasa says

A low-pressure area (LPA) currently lingering off the waters near Kalibo, Aklan, is forecast to bring rains across Palawan and the rest of the MIMAROPA region before it dissipates by Thursday afternoon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In a weather advisory released Wednesday morning, PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the LPA, while not expected to develop into a tropical cyclone, will remain within the Visayas and MIMAROPA area throughout the day. It is projected to fizzle out by Thursday noon or afternoon.

“This low-pressure area, while also not expected to be a tropical cyclone, is expected to bring rains in most parts of southern Luzon and Visayas,” Estareja said in Filipino. “It will only stay within the Visayas area and MIMAROPA, including Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan, until it dissipates.”

The state weather bureau has not issued any gale warning across the country, suggesting that while skies may darken over Palawan, coastal waters will remain relatively calm.

As of 3 a.m. Wednesday, two LPAs were monitored inside the Philippine area of responsibility: one 425 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales, and another over the waters off Aklan. The one near Zambales is expected to exit the country’s monitoring boundary within 24 hours.

For Palawan, which sits within the MIMAROPA cluster of islands often hit by tropical disturbances, this LPA serves as a reminder that the onset of the rainy season is inching closer.

Though the system is weak and short-lived, local authorities are advised to stay alert for possible flash floods in low-lying areas and monitor updates from PAGASA, especially in northern Palawan and island municipalities with limited drainage infrastructure.
