The city government will initiate the nurturing of some 1,300 Balayong trees within the Balayong Park on Saturday, July 27, together with other government agencies, institutions, schools, civic organizations, academe, civil society, barangays, and other stakeholders.
Atty. Carlo B. Gomez, City Environment and Natural Resources Officer, said that the Balayong Park envisioned by Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron is a realization of Puerto Princesa City’s dream to establish its own distinct and unique park.
“Ito ay part ng history. Matagal ng panawagan na sana ang Puerto Princesa magtatayo tayo ng sarili nating park. Kaya nagtulong tulong tayo. Nitong mga nakaraang Balayong nakita natin na ang sumali ay sobrang dami,” he said.
The first Balayong activity was conducted last July 2017 with the planting of some 700 Balayong trees participated by various sectors. Last year, young Balayong trees recommended for transplanting was manually earthballed by government agencies, private sector, participating civic groups and associations, individuals, and other stakeholders.
Atty. Gomez said that the activity will be for the nurturing of 1,300 Balayong trees.
“We will be providing fertilizers for the nurturing (of Balayong trees). May organic fertilizer na ibuhos doon. Merong mga replacement (ng Balayong) na gagawin doon sa hindi nag-survive. Andyan naman ang earthballing equipment,” he explained.
The earthballing equipment procured by the city government and just delivered last month is of big help to save Balayong trees and other trees affected by infrastructure projects for transplanting to other locations, said Environmental Management Specialist Romina Magtanong.
The city will continue to plant Balayong trees within the park in the future but it will depend on the available spaces based on the design of the park. The Balayong Park has other components such as infrastructures such as buildings and facilities.
He said that their office has record of the name of those who adopted these individual trees, and these information and data is easily accessible with other information regarding the individual Balayong, such as its location, blocks, and GPS reading.
In preparation for the activity, a three-day exhibit from July 22-24, 2019 is mounted within the Atrium at the ground floor of the New City Hall.
The Sining para sa Balayong features the artworks of three local painters, Jonathan Benitez, Leonard Ansiong and Elordie Mesac. Photos during the previous Balayong festivals were also on display in the exhibit.
The Balayong tree is among the tree species that has pinkish flowers and already thrived in Puerto Princesa and in Palawan many years ago.
