PUERTO PRINCESA CITY — Umabot 417 saplings (may taas na tatlong talampakan o higit pa) ng Balayong tree (Cherry Blossom) ang itinanim ng mga lumahok sa ikalawang taong pagdiriwang ng Balayong Festival sa Puerto Princesa.

Hinukay ang mga ito mula sa Environmental Estate ng city government sa Barangay Sta. Lucia.

Sinabi ni City Environment and Natural Resources Officer (ENRO) Carlo Gomez, sinisimulan na ng pamahalaang lungsod ang pagsasakatuparan ng urban forestry program.

“We are establishing an urban forestry program in Puerto Princesa by providing park for the community, target natin na palakasin ang ating environment ecosystem,” pahayag ng opisyal.

“Ang pagkakaalam ko kauna-unahan tayo na nag-establish ng urban forestry program sa Pilipinas, first time na may LGU na naglaan ng 62-hectare open spaces para sa parke na ito,” dagdag pa niya.

Nominado rin aniya ang programa ng siyudad sa gaganaping First World Forum on Urban Poor Forestry sa Italy sa darating na Nobyembre na ang isa sa mga criteria ay ang pagkakaroong ng open space park at pagtatatag nito sa pamamagitan ng pagtutulungan ng mga LGU at komunidad.

Bukod sa nga punong Balayong, naitanim din sa parke ang 300 na mga bagong seedlings na inihanda ng City ENRO para sa mga nakiisa sa aktibidad at bilang pamalit sa mga nalanta na itinanim noong nakaraang taon.

Kinumpirma rin ni Gomez na suportado ng national government ang proyekto matapos na aprubahan ng Department of Budget and Management (DBM) ang P92M para rito. (AJA/PDN)
