The Puerto Princesa City Water District (PPCWD) said that they will construct a man-made lake in Barangay Sta. Lucia to impound 7-million cubic meter of rainwater and excess water from nearby rivers.
The proposed project site will be in the Environmental Estate, a government owned property administered and managed by the City Government of Puerto Princesa.
PPCWD General Manager, Engr. Walter Laurel said that purpose of the project is for rainwater impounding and to ensure sufficient supply of water for PPCWD consumers.
He further said that the proposed project is feasible.
“Nagpa conduct na tayo ng study at ito ay nakita naman na feasible. Ang mga excess ng Binuan River, Montible River at iba pang nearby na ilog ay e-divert natin sa man-made lake,” Laurel said.
Engr Justino Obsanga II Assistant General Manager for Operations said that the proposed project’s timeline is only one to one and a half year. The first phase will require them P800-million, and since the project will be in three phases, this will cost a total of P2.5-billion.
The project will involved the excavation of a large area to enable it to impound large volume of water.
“Huhukayin itong 114 hectares gagawing reservoir. Malaking area ang huhukayin. May 7 million na cubic na tubig na kayang e impound that would be enough sa kakulangan natin during tag init,” Laurel explained.
He expected that by 2029, the project’s first phase will be already operational.
“Next year ay ang ECC (environmental compliance certificate) and detailed engineering design. Dapat by 2029 ay magagamit na natin ang Phase I ng Man-made Lake para ma-sustain na natin ang ating water supply,” he said.
As of the present, PPCWD and the city government of Puerto Princesa are still discussing the details of the project since the property where the project will rise is owned by the city government.
