The City Government of Puerto Princesa will co-fund the implementation of a foreign-funded city-wide marine plastic reduction project in an effort to intensify its execution and ensure the sustainability of the initiative.
In his letter to the Sangguniang Panlungsod through Vice Mayor Peter Q. Maristela, Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron has requested the body to pass a resolution manifesting the city’s support to the undertaking. He likewise requested the council to allow him to sign and enter into a MOA in behalf of the city government with the PEMSEA.
Mayor Bayron explained that this partnership will “strengthen capacity and raise public awareness, enhance governance, and showcase best practices and innovative solutions for marine plastic management that will pave way for Puerto Princesa to transition into circular economy.”
Circular economy is an economic system based on the reuse and regeneration of materials or products, especially as a means of continuing production in a sustainable and environment friendly way.
Puerto Princesa is one of the project sites of a marine plastics reduction project funded by the Republic of Korea through its Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) known as Marine Plastics ODA project implemented by the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA).
This is aimed to significantly reduce ocean -bound plastic pollution through improved governance, innovative solutions, beach monitoring, and community awareness programs.
PEMSEA, as a regional coordinating mechanism aimed to implement the sustainable development strategies of coastal and marine areas in East Asian Seas region, is the implementer of this Marine Plastic ODA.
