“Inspire them, train them young to get into sports.”
In honor of the late Basketball Coach Meneles “Boy” Viray, his mentees, a group of volunteer Basketball Trainers together with JCI Puerto Princesa Oil organized the VCAMP: Basketball Clinic and 3-on-3 Tournament for Kids, Teens, & Women.
The said activity, which was held on April 2-3, 2022 at the PSU Gymnasium, Tiniguiban Heights, Puerto Princesa City, was inspired by Coach Viray’s advocacy in providing sports and wellness opportunities to the youth of Palawan.
“Ito ay isang pagpapatuloy sa legacy na sinimulan ni Tatay Boy para sa mga Batang Palaweño. Happy Birthday in Heaven, Tay! Sana masaya ka na makitang ipinagpapatuloy naming ang programa mo,” said Coach Bobby Viray, son of the late Coach Boy.
Aiming to provide an opportunity for youth development, the organizers initiated the event to serve as exploratory sports program for an annual basketball clinic and tournament.
“When it comes to developing the young people, sports undertaking is one the best way to teach them the value of sportsmanship whilst sharpening their skills and potentials plus getting them to be physically active, healthy and fit,” said Karl Dylan Aquino, 2022 president of JCI Puerto Princesa Oil.
VCAMP has four divisions, namely: Under 12, Under 15, Under 18, and Women’s. A total of 152 young athletes joined the activity, all with consent from their parents or guardians.
Since community quarantines were implemented in 2020, contact sports have been banned all over the country. Under Alert Level 1, contact sports including Basketball are now allowed.
Several personalities and local brands supported the initiative in championing sports as a learning experience and channel for values formation to the young people.
More sports activities are being planned by the group, all for the youth of Palawan.
JCI Puerto Princesa Oil is a local non-profit organization and one of the local chapters of a worldwide federation that provides development opportunities empowering young people to create positive change.
