A total of 316 bags of blood were collected in a Mass Bloodletting Activity facilitated by the Philippine Red Cross and the local government unit (LGU) of Aborlan held in Western Philippines University on Wednesday.
With the theme “Dugong Aborlan, Alay para sa Bayan,” WPU students, local residents, Philippine Marines and Philippine National Police (PNP) members gave their blood.
RJ dela Calzada of Red Cross Palawan said that the event was also made possible through the collaborative efforts of Alpha Phi Omega (APO) through the initiative of Sean Joya.
“Kami sa Red Cross, kasama ang LGU at ibang organizations dito sa Aborlan, gusto natin na magkaroon ng regular donation para sila ‘yung pinaka-malapit na magdag-dag ng dugo sa Puerto Princesa, hindi lang para sa Aborlan kung hindi pati sa buong kababayan natin dito sa Palawan,” dela Calzada said.
Dela Calzada added that they are planning to make blood donation a regular event in each municipality, especially on far-flung island towns such as Balabac, Culion and Coron, stressing that the supply of blood in hospitals and other medical facilities in Palawan needs to be sustained.
On the other hand, dela Calzada also called out to other local government unit (LGU) of other municipalities to coordinate with them to facilitate and organize blood donation activity in their respective towns.
“Hinihikayat natin lahat ng LGU’s katulad sa Narra, Brookes Point, Taytay, Roxas at San Vicente para tuloy-tuloy ‘yung blood donations sakanilang lugar. Gusto natin maging regular at marami,”
“We’re challenging our other mayors na magkaroon din sa kanila ng malaking blood donations,” dela Calzada said.
LGUs, through their local Municipal Health Office (MHO), need to have at least two percent of the town’s total population as registered blood donors and at least one percent of blood units collected annually is a health requirement in order for a municipality to be a candidate for the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine Red Cross through a memorandum issued by the Department of Health (DOH).
Celsa Adier, Aborlan muncipal mayor, was thankful that their LGU sponsored such event.
“Maraming salamat sainyong lahat, lalo na ‘yung ating mga donors,” Adier said.
