The Palawan Provincial Government, in collaboration with the Brooke’s Point Local Government Unit (LGU) under Mayor Cesareo R. Benedito, Jr., successfully carried out various activities in celebration of World Rabies Day 2023 on September 28, 2023.
Under the theme “All for 1, One Health for all,” the festivities commenced with a motorcade participated in by personnel from the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), led by Dr. Darius P. Mangcucang, the Office of the Municipal Agriculture, Barangay Veterinary Aides, and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
A brief program followed, during which Mayor Benedito expressed gratitude to the Provincial Government for organizing the event in Brooke’s Point.
Students from Brooke’s Point National High School and Sacred Heart of Jesus High School also participated in contests such as the On the Spot Slogan Making Contest and Poster Making Contest, aimed at raising awareness among students about the significance of the occasion.
The significance of this event lies in its crucial role in raising awareness about the deadly threat of rabies to both human and animal populations. Rabies is a highly dangerous disease that remains a concern not only in the Philippines but globally.
Through these efforts, Palawan strives to create a safer and more informed environment for its residents, ultimately working towards the eradication of rabies and ensuring the well-being of both its human and animal populations.
Through the Animal Population Control program of the PVO, 73 dogs and cats underwent neutering, with 53 males undergoing castration and 20 females undergoing spaying on September 26-27. The objective of this effort is to reduce the number of stray dogs and cats on the streets, thereby further combatting rabies in the province.
Dr. Mangcucang emphasized that the annual World Rabies Day celebration aims to increase public awareness about rabies, a highly dangerous disease affecting both humans and animals.
