The Palawan provincial government will send 11 athletes and three coaches to compete in the Arafura Games 2019 on April 27 to May 4, 2019 in Darwin, Australia.
The Arafura Games is participated by China, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Macau China, Timor-Leste, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu. It is a unique, inclusive multi-sport event.
Francis Nemenzo, Sports and Games Inspector of the Provincial Sports Division. said that the Palawan delegation is part of the Philippine delegation which the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will deploy for the Arafura Games. These 11 athletes are among those achiever-athletes during an sports event of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippine (BIMP) East Asia Growth Area (EAGA).
“Yung mga ipapadala natin ay iyong mga athlete na nanalo ng gold, silver and bronze sa Brunei BIMP EAGA noong December 2018,” he said.
The Philippine delegation has athletes coming from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The provinces with highest number of athletes for the event are Davao City, Davao del Norte, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos and Palawan.
The delegation features athletes from the Batang Pinoy, Palarong Pambansa and Philippine National Games.
The Arafura Games is being held after an eight-year hiatus. The Philippines will compete in athletics, swimming, basketball, boxing, beach volleyball, sepak takraw, weightlifting and badminton.
