The seminar focused on the current trends and issues surrounding journalists and for the students to have a bird’s eye view on what is the real life of a media person, which was shared by Engr. Harthwell Capistrano, the editor in chief of Palawan Daily News.
Mr. Rexcel John Sorza, the editorial consultant of Palawan Daily News, an international journalist and founder of JournAcademy Training Team, discussed “Rewriting News Stories into Timeless Pieces” and making news articles easy to read and understand by the readers.
The event also aimed to further educate those who are taking part in the internship program while introducing brand new perspective of the field to the other students. Mark John Dagos, a 1st year AB Communication student, said that he learned new ideas and techniques on how to write news stories. “Ang aking mga natutunan dito ay dapat sa pag babalita at paggawa ng news kailangan sa una pa lang mababaling na ang attention ng mga nagbabasa, kailangan kilalanin at pakisamahan ang taong nakuhaan mo ng source at lalo na sa lahat mapapanahon ang pangyayari at mga kaganapan na iyong ibabalita,” Dagos said.
Ms. Fabianne Paderes – Garvilles also shared her experience as a former TV journalist of GMA Network Inc. Iloilo station, inspiring students to believe in their passion and love, especially on broadcast journalism. “This will not be the first and the last. In fact, we will be conducting regular sessions here as we are finalizing our partnership with the Palawan State University,” said Mr. Sevedeo Borda III, associate editor of Palawan Daily News.
“As a regional newspaper, Palawan Daily News will also be spearheading regular mentoring sessions on news and feature writing, including photojournalism and video editing with different student publications in the province,” said Mr. Kent Janaban, publisher of Palawan Daily News. Prof Mark Joshua Arista thanked Palawan Daily News for the valuable opportunity from which their students can have a glimpse of the real world and learn from practitioners themselves.
