It was a memorable evening of August 24, 2018. For some, it is just a normal day, but for the Palawan State University’s Petroleum engineers in the making, the night was made for them to shine.
Their coats and tuxedos embracing their bodies, gown and dresses are dazzling as the lights hit them. Wearing their fanciest dangling earrings, their high heels ticking as they walk through the isle, all the guys’ hair are styled in their best, they are probably dressed in their best outfits while they held their masks to cover their faces.
The Society of Petroleum Engineeers (SPE) Convergence gave the aspiring petroleum engineers their time to take their breaks from all the assignments, quizzes and mind boggling exams as they have their acquaintance party. Patrick Yap, SPE-PSU-SC President, said the event does not only bond the whole student body but it is also the reward from their hell weeks and midterms.
“Yung event kasi na to nai-schedule after the midterms, so parang party namin siya,” he said. Mr. Yap added that they incorporated the event with a conference and invited speakers for them to be empowered while getting acquainted with the whole student body. “Dito sa event, sinama namin ‘yung conference for us to get acquainted sa amin student body kasi hindi pa lahat nagkakakilala,” said Yap.
Mr. Allen Hughes, one of the speakers, said that the event will help the students have an overview of their future and help them know their roles in the gas industry. “This would give them the insight what to expect and what the future holds for them… And so they’ll know what they will contribute in the gas industry,” he explained.
Mr. Hughes also said that the key for the success of a petroleum engineer is to push through and identifying their strengths and weaknesses. “Learn what your strengths are and most importantly, learn on what your weaknesses are. Build on your strengths and improve on your weaknesses, you will always get up,” he further said. Mr. Hughes advised that no matter how hard it is to graduate on your degree, he stated, “Never give up.”
