Puerto Princesa City Council is proposing to institutionalize the provision of sanitizers in business establishments in Puerto Princesa.

The measure, proposed by Majority Floor Leader Victor Oliveros, is an offshoot from Councilor Patrick Hagedorn’s Resolution No. 1193-2021 that urges supermarkets to refrain from using a glove-usage policy on their employees.

Hagedorn insists that use of gloves is a one sided measure because it only protects the cashiers while posing harm to the buying public.

He reiterated that instead of using protective equipment, it is best to observe the use of alcohol and hand sanitizers. He added that during this pandemic, the best protection is by increasing sanitation efforts and providing sanitation products in workplaces so that the employees and the general public are equally protected.

Oliveros, who filed the ordinance, pointed out that sanitation materials must be available at all times. This is to adhere to the DOH’s guidelines to ensure minimum health standards, specifically in hand hygiene — in times when the use of water is inappropriate.

“It seems po na talagang mainam na laging mag-alcohol. Hindi lang ‘yong isang patak lang. Huwag na po tayong manghinayang sa alcohol!–[dapat] parang naghuhugas talaga tayo ng kamay,” he said.

The Sanggunian Draft Ordinance (SDO) No. 223-2021 or the “An Ordinance institutionalizing the provision of sanitizers in business establishments in the City of Puerto Princesa” has now been referred to the Committee on Health and Sanitation, chaired by Councilor Roy Ventura, for further deliberation of the committee members.
