The Buenavista Municipal Police Station (MPS) in the Province of Marinduque confirmed that two died and two others are missing among 16 fishermen aboard a fishing boat that came from Pagbilao, Quezon.
According to the Buenavista MPS, on September 8 at 7:30 AM, their station received a call from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) that the body of a man was found on the beach of Barangay Tungib, Buenavista, Marinduque.
Based on the initial investigation, Edgardo C. Garay, captain of the Green Horse fishing boat, expressed that at 6:00 PM on September 7 they boarded the boat in Barangay Tungib to hide due to typhoon ‘Jolina’.
He added that 9 of his crew swam to the beach at 7:00 PM because the waves were not that strong.
7 of the fishermen chose to stay to guard their boat, but by midnight of September 8, their boat had been washed away by the strong waves.
The captain decided to move to the Barangay Yook because the area was hidden from the strong waves. Before reaching the said location, their boat sank so, they jumped into the sea which, resulted in the death of one and the missing four fishermen.
The deceased was identified, on September 8, as Jovert Manalo Garay, 21, single and a resident of Sitio Lagundian, Barangay Tungib, Buenavista, Marinduque.
On the same date, the two fishermen, Bernie Villavicencio, 41, and Hermes Villavicencio, 35, both residents of the said province, were immediately found and rescued.
Meanwhile, at 2:00 PM on September 9, the dead body of Bobby Villavicencio, 46, a resident of barangay Tungib, Buenavista, Marinduque, was found.
The joint forces of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), MDRRMO and Buenavista MPS are still searching for another missing person, Almario Mondito, 63 years old.
