Have you ever come across moments at work where you feel like being unproductive despite working and sitting in front of your computer for the whole day? It is best characterize when you’ve been going over and over a specific task and reaching a point where it doesn’t make sense to you anymore, nothing good happens every day and you feel uninspired and exhausted even at the start of the day. Frequent headaches and illnesses happen. These are some noticeable symptoms of being burned out.
“Burn-out” according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from excessive workplace stress that has not been successfully carried on. It refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and not generally in all areas of life. It is characterized by three dimensions namely, feelings of energy depletion and exhaustion, increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job and reduced professional efficacy.
Imagine having the need to compromise the quality of your work just because the feeling of unexplained tiredness consumes you even before starting anything, and that continues every day. So, here are some tips to help you break that cycle.
Connect to people- When your mind is clouded with so many problems and negative thoughts, it’s important that there is someone (friend/co-worker/family member) you can communicate your thoughts to. That person doesn’t need to quickly lessen your stress, he/she/they just need to be good listener/s. Just don’t connect with negative people, they will just double the struggle.
Look at your work in a different light- A duty/job can at times be routinary and dull, hence try to put some value on what you do. Determine the points you like about your job; it will most likely give you a sense of duty and purpose.
Balance and time off- Life should not just be about work and money. When your job is demanding, try to find some relief from your hobbies, family, or even short chats with your co-workers. Taking time off is also recommended. Try to disassociate yourself from the situation so as to change your environment. Go on vacation, unwind and recharge.
