Among those who participated the Mudball throwing activities were Philippine Coast Guard, PPSRNP employees, representatives from business sector, PSU students specifically BS Environmental Science interns, organizations such as AB Conservation, barangay officials and local residents.

The City ENRO through its Environmental Management Services Division facilitated the Mudball throwing. Sources from the division said that some 4,000 pieces of mudballs are prepared for the activity.

Elizabeth Maclang described these activities as their way of expressing of gratitude to the environment.

Since 2016, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO) of Puerto Princesa headed by City ENR Officer, Atty. Carlo B. Gomez intensified its bioremediation activities to water bodies such as rivers, creeks, and in the coastal area of this city, through the use of effective microorganisms mudballs intended for the natural healing of the city’s coastal waters.  Atty. Gomez said that the bioremediation, which was started in 2016, will continue for 11 consecutive years to attain significant results and achieve better coastal water quality.

Bioremediation is a waste management process using live organisms to neutralize or remove harmful pollutants from contaminated areas. It has an effective microorganism solution that breaks down toxins and consumes bad bacteria in the water.

The throwing of EM mudballs has become a regular activity of the City ENRO to improve water quality of the coastal waters in the city.

In 2022, prior to the holding of Ironman 70.1 event, close to 100,000 pieces of EM mudballs were thrown at Puerto Princesa Bay specifically at the city’s baywalk and nearby priority sites during mudball-throwing activities initiated by the City ENRO and participated by organizations and stakeholders.

Presidential Proclamation 839 issued on March 26, 1971 by then President Ferdinand E. Marcos established the PPSRNP as a protected area.
