The Old Governor’s Residence, with its rich historical significance and elegant architecture, has long been a cherished landmark in Puerto Princesa. However, its doors have remained closed to the public for many years. Now, the Palawan Provincial Government, through Governor V Dennis Socrates, has unveiled plans to convert this grand structure into a museum that will showcase the vibrant heritage and cultural legacy of Palawan.

Located near the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Puerto Princesa City, the Old Governor’s Residence served as the home of Governor Socrates’ family from 1968 to 1986 during the term of his father, former Governor Salvador “Badong” Socrates.

Costing P7,947,289.59, for the Phase 1 of its restoration, the new tourism site promises visitors a range of exhibits and interactive displays that will take them on a journey through Palawan’s past, from its humble beginning to its modern-day achievements. It will highlight the history and significance of four hundred (400) years of Christianity in Palawan.

The restoration has already begun in June and is expected to be formally opened to the public on December 13, 2023. The project also aims to generate economic opportunities for the local community, including job creation and the promotion of small businesses, like coffee shops, to tourists.

Governor Socrates initially mentioned plans to restore their former home into a museum during his first State of the Province Address (SOPA). According to him, this will promote a “sense of history” as it is part of the province’s heritage. The restoration aims to enhance the culture and tourism of the province, as well as strengthen the unity of the Palaweño people.

While preparations are underway, tourists and residents can eagerly anticipate the unveiling of this new cultural landmark in the coming months, offering a fresh and enriching experience for everyone.
