The National Task Force-West Philippine Sea, in a press release, reported that China Coast Guard (CCG) and Chinese Maritime Militia (CMM) vessels engaged in aggressive maneuvers, deploying a water cannon against the Philippine supply vessel M/L Kalayaan.

This incident occurred during an attempt to illegally impede a routine resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre (LS 57) at Ayungin Shoal earlier today, November 10.

Despite facing reckless harassment, including dangerous maneuvers and water cannon deployment by CCG vessel 5203, both M/L Kalayaan and Unaizah Mae 1 successfully completed their mission, reaching LS 57.

The Philippine Embassy in Beijing promptly demarched the Chinese foreign ministry, while the Department of Foreign Affairs conveyed a direct protest through the Maritime Communications Mechanism, insisting on the immediate evacuation of Chinese vessels from Ayungin Shoal.

President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., on the other hand, commended the bravery and dedication of the Philippine Navy, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and Philippine Coast Guard personnel involved in these missions.

The President emphasized the Philippines’ commitment to upholding its legal rights in maritime zones, emphasizing adherence to UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

The Philippines strongly condemns China’s unprovoked acts, questioning the sincerity of China’s calls for peaceful dialogue.

The international community is urged to recognize the importance of respecting well-established and legally settled rights to ensure peace and stability in the region.
