The ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure on Pag-asa Island, located in the municipality of Kalayaan, are set to reach a significant milestone this May with the completion of Phase 3 of the Sheltered Port project.

The project, overseen by the Provincial Government of Palawan, is on track to be completed by the end of this month, signaling a major advancement in the region’s transportation and economic infrastructure.

According to the Provincial Engineering Office (PEO), the construction of Phase 3 is already 98% finished, with only final touches remaining. This phase of the project will further improve the island’s port facilities, which began to serve its purpose last year following the completion of Phase 2 in April 2023. The port has already begun supporting the transport of both goods and passengers, facilitating much-needed connectivity for the remote island.

The sheltering port, which started its development on June 30, 2022, is being built with an allocation of PHP 466 million from the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and the PEO is responsible for its implementation. The port’s development is part of a broader effort to enhance the infrastructure of Pag-asa Island and improve the quality of life for its residents.

With tourism and fishing as key industries in the region, the improved port infrastructure is poised to play a crucial role in sustaining growth and enhancing the livelihoods of Pag-asa’s residents.
