Five dead, 43 rescued, 86 still missing as survivors recall sudden blast and sudden blackout in lower deck accommodations

Fears that dozens of passengers were burned alive inside their cabins intensified Friday afternoon as specialized recovery teams and forensic investigators finally breached the scorched lower decks of the passenger-cargo vessel MV June Aster.

As the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) finally push past blocked doors and lower decks, they are facing a grim confirmation that human remains, are indeed, trapped inside.

While the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has officially recorded five recovered bodies and over 80 people still missing, frontline rescue personnel on the ground warn that the number is expected to climb as teams clear the debris and ash.

Parallel to the maritime operations, a multi-agency inquiry is set to deepen. Investigators from the Philippine Coast Guard and maritime regulators are expected to examine the exact sequence of the initial explosion near the cargo bay, cross-referencing survivor testimonies against the corrected passenger and cargo manifests.

Meanwhile, the shipping line, Atienza Interisland Ferries Inc., faces intense scrutiny over compliance and crew emergency protocols, while national authorities have signaled broader administrative reviews of pre-departure protocols across interisland routes.

For the families gathered at municipal coordination hubs in Coron, the immediate hours will bring the agonizing, systematic work of forensic identification, transforming raw grief into official tallies as the true cost of Wednesday night’s catastrophe is formally brought to light.
