The City Government of Puerto Princesa spearheaded the groundbreaking of several infrastructure projects in Barangay Irawan, some 10 kilometers from the city’s urban center, including the proposed market in the barangay on Friday, August 21, 2020.

City Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron, Vice Mayor Nancy Socrates, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod led the groundbreaking ceremony together with some city government employees, and barangay officials of Irawan headed by Punong Barangay Noel Resuma.

The City Government allocated P 149.7 Million for the public market in Barangay Irawan.

Meanwhile, the proposed four-lane concrete road which P57.7-Million has been allocated.

Within the vicinity, the Philippine National Police (PNP) station will also rise, which P19.9 Million has been allocated for its construction.

The City Government also announced that they will implement an all-weather road project whill be implemented by the City Engineering Office or by administration. Also funded by the city, is the street lighting project.

The proposed P91-Million Bus and Jeepney Terminal, in Barangay Irawan which started last year is still ongoing.

The location of the new terminal is strategic since a six-lane national road connecting the North Highway and South Highway will traverse via Barangay Irawan.

Other proposed projects in the area is the building for restaurant for rental, and Halal-slaughterhouse.

Mayor Bayron said that they considered the construction of Halal slaughterhouse in Puerto Princesa, which is now in the pipeline. This will be the very first of its kind in Palawan.

The Halal slaughterhouse is in preparation of the forthcoming Kudat-Buliluyan sea route and the anticipated influx of tourists from Malaysia- a predominantly Muslim country. The ports of Kudat, Malaysia and Buliluyan in Bataraza town, Palawan has a distance of only 168 kilometers, a short sea route.

Mayor Bayron in his State of the City Address (SOCA) last year announced that the ballooning population, heavy traffic and congestion in the city’s urban center compelled the development planners to expand Puerto Princesa’s development to one of its suburban areas- Barangay Irawan.

He then presented the city government’s plan to establish its newest hub in Barangay Irawan, where some government facilities are already existing.

The P50 million Agricultural Trading Center funded by both the national government through the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the city government is seen to boost the local farmers and producers. This facility is similar with other trading post in the country were wholesalers can trade their agricultural products to buyers and traders.
