Putting up a city-owned crematorium facility in Puerto Princesa can give solution to its lack of burial grounds, a city councilor said Monday.
Councilor Victor Oliveros stated this in an interview with the media Monday after the plenary received a letter from the local government unit (LGU) of Barangay Matahimik requesting that a cemetery be established in their area.
“Sana pinagbu-buksan natin ‘yong usapin na crematorium. Kasi ‘yong crematorium alam ninyo hindi na kakailanganin ‘yong lupa. Kung magka-ganoon, mai-ibsan ‘yong problema natin sa lupa na sementeryo,” said Oliveros.
“Marahil sa ngayon sa mga five years from now ay puwede ma-address natin ‘yon, kung sa ano pa at ako ay natitiyak ko na ang ating punong lungsod ay hindi tumitigil sa paghahanap, maging kami man dito sa Sanggunian, ay patuloy na naghahanap ng solusyon kung papaano tayo makaka-provide ng sementeryo dahil alam natin ‘yong pangangailangan dito. Sa ngayon po ‘yon po nais kong ibalita sa inyo na siguro hindi na magtagal ay puwede na, kumbaga hindi ko lang alam kung sino ang unang magla-like doon,” he added.
Oliveros further stated the city is already facing a dilemma in providing lots for a cemetery due to its increasing population.
Oliveros added that while there is no proposed measure yet on establishment of city government-owned crematorium, the matter has already been informally discussed earlier by the councilors who all view it as cost-efficient practice.
He said the public is somewhat expected to embrace this widely-accepted custom.
