HINDI MAPIGIL ang mga batang ito na lapitan upang usisain ang dambuhalang bangkang papel. May sukat ng halos eight feet ang taas at may habang 15 feet,  naka-display ito ngayon  sa Princess Eulalia Park, 200 metro ang layo mula sa pier ng lungsod ng Puerto Princesa at napakalapit lamang sa Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral.

Ang nasabing art installation project na pinamagatang “Baroto” ay ang main project para sa SIKATUGYAW Festival sa selebrasyon ng National Arts Month ngayong Pebrero. Ito ay sa pagtutulungan ng City at Provincial Government, kaagapay ang National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Layunin ng mga nasa likod ng konseptong ito – ang Palawan Artists Collective, na sa pamamagitan ng ganitong art installation ay mailapit ang sining sa puso at isip ng mga mamamayan, lalo’t higit sa mga kabataan.

“Alam namin lahat ng tao nakaka-relate dito…. ‘Yung mga tatay at nagbabantay na dumadaan [sa Eulalia Park], natutuwa [sila]….Kasi ‘yung paggawa ng bangkang papel, parang hindi na itinuturo sa school masyado ‘yan. Unlike no’ng time namin, tinuturuan kami ng ‘Origami’ at skill ng pagfo-fold [ng papel]. Common kasi na ang mga bata more na sa smartphones ngayon, at nakakaligtaan na ang ganitong klaseng experience,” pahayag ni Jonathan Benitez.

Dagdag niya, ang “baroto” ay simbolo ng kultura ng Palawan bilang coastal province kung saan ang mga tao ay may natatanging kaugnayan sa dagat. Ito ay isang pahayag din ng patuloy na pangarap na malayang makalayag sa West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Umabot umano ng isang buwan ang pagpapatayo sa nasabing bangkang papel na gawa sa marine plywood. Inaasahan namang magtatagal ng dalawa hanggang tatlong taon ang materyales na exposed sa init at ulan.

“Pangarap namin na makagawa ng structure na magiging legacy namin bilang artists. Mas maganda kung magawa ito sa kongkretong materyales kung may karagdagang budget or sponsor. Ang paintings kapag nabili ng collector, nakatago lang sa kani-kanilang bahay, pero ang public art [na kagaya nito], mas effective at mas relevant sa public upang sila ay ma-educate, especially na walang art gallery dito sa Puerto [Princesa],” dagdag pa ni Benitez.
