An ordinance promoting the use of bicycles in Puerto Princesa was proposed to the City Council on Monday.

Councilor Nesario Awat told Palawan Daily News (PDN) in an interview Monday, December 9, that the use of bicycles is not only “environment-friendly and beneficial to health” but may boost as well the tourism industry of the city.

Awat also said that a celebration of “bicycle month” every November was proposed under the draft of the measure, which may “attract visitors and spur the tourism growth in Puerto Princesa”.

He also reiterated the importance of riding bicycles in addressing traffic congestion and reducing fuel consumption towards environment-friendly transportation.

In his draft ordinance, he noted cyclists are to register their bicycles and secure the necessary license from the City Treasurer’s Office (CTO) or another office that will be designated by the City Mayor for this transaction.

Awat further said the cyclists must strictly follow traffic rules, wear necessary safety gear, and observe proper security precautions imposed under the proposed ordinance.

He added necessary cycling infrastructures such as bicycle parking and lanes are all incorporated in the proposed measure.

In his draft, failure to abide by the rules provided in the ordinance will be penalized ranging from P1,000 to P5,000 or in a form of community service.
