The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through Strengthening Urban Resilience through Growth with Equity (SURGE) in Puerto Princesa conducted a series of trainings as part of the Grassroots Women Entrepreneurial Development Program to train 80 women entrepreneurs in entrepreneurial mind-setting and the rudimentary aspects of establishing new business ventures.

The said program is formulated by the Puerto Princesa City Government with the technical assistance of the USAID.

“The training sessions were conducted by local women entrepreneurs from the city’s major private sector groups such as the Puerto Princesa Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the City Tourism Council. Under the city’s Grassroots Women Entrepreneurial Development Program, the leading women business owners will serve as mentors who will guide aspiring barangay-based women entrepreneurs as they set up and operate their small businesses. These sessions were supported under the U.S. Government’s Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative,” the USAID-SURGE said.

30 women from the community-based tourism sector in six barangays in the City were trained on basic livelihood and entrepreneurial skills, while 39 aspiring women entrepreneurs from other barangays were trained in food processing technologies specifically, the essential skills to produce good quality meat and fish products.

“These women tourism stakeholders were severely affected by the closure of the city’s tourism activities due to quarantine restrictions and wanted to pivot to other business opportunities,” the USAID-SURGE further stated.
