I’ve probably heard the expression “Jack of all trades, master of none” a hundred times already. It’s short but, it says a lot.
It’s relevant especially for a college student like myself because it’s almost time for us to enter the real world. The world is changing fast and if we’re not properly equipped, we might find ourselves stuck in a bit of a rut.
In today’s world, earning a diploma – and a college degree for that matter – is not nearly enough for a graduate to land a job. One must possess the right set of skills and theoretical background in order to become the “right” man or woman for the job. As one of my professors said, if you don’t have any relevant skills, your diploma is “just another piece of paper”.
Many established professionals would suggest that you should invest in all special trainings that you could take in order to stack up some additional skills for the future. Not only will you gain additional skills but, you will also have quite a lot of options if you decide that you want a career shift.
You may get training from a privately owned training center, or from TESDA, depending on the type of training that you want to take. What matters is that you have a certificate to show that you are well-equipped for whatever job you’re applying for. You could even train while going to school. Some training centers offer flexible schedules for some of their courses, much like TESDA. You could go to school during schooldays, and train during weekends.
On the other hand, there are those who land on a good job even if they don’t have a college degree. Their set of skills were enough to prove their worth to the company they are now working for. This emphasizes the importance of having a set of skills that could potentially help you in the future.
Take note that you most probably will never have to use some of those skills, but it never hurts to have some in the bank as a contingency plan.
However, in the end, it’s still a game of chances. You’d need to have the chance to prove your worth to your prospect company. So take every chance you have at stacking up those skills so that when the time comes, you’d have the right tools to battle your way to your future career.
