The United Nations Day celebrated this October 24 worldwide exemplifies its main goal to bring lasting peace among nations around the globe, but is it just merely a pronouncement without realistic outcomes?
UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a strong message during the United Nations Day Concert in New York not to give up in struggles to fulfil the mandate of founding charter.
His remarkable message signals the challenge on the United Stations in ensuring its commitment for lasting peace, repairing trust and healing our planet.
In 1948, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 24, the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, as which “shall be devoted to making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gaining their support for its work.”
The United Nations is an international organization created in 1945 and currently made up of 193 member states. The mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.
Our country is among the 51 founders of the United Nations.
United Nations’ objectives are to promote and facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, civil rights, civil liberties, political freedoms, democracy, and the achievement of lasting world peace.
Looking at the role of the UN, they are not only helping refugees, fighting climate change, but also promotes sustainable management and development across the world.
However, other believe that United Nations has no real authority, and no means of enforcing any of its rulings and the its members can either choose to abide or not. And it has failed to maintain world peace especially in conflicts among Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
A lot of issues and concerns have surrounded the United Nations as it seemed like they are only good at pronouncements, but lacking its strength to impose its charter among its members around the world.
The United Nations should serve as the main peacekeeper that ensures conflicts are addressed and peace and good relations among nations are upheld without biases and partiality.
There is still hope for the United Nations to achieve the lasting world peace. It’s only then when it totally cleanse its member ranks with uprightness without vested and personal interests, avoiding wars and conflicts.
