A livelihood seminar for basket weaving using pandan leaves was conducted by Tagbanua elders to 18 participants from Sitio Sugod Uno of Brgy. Cabayugan in Puerto Princesa last August 25. The said training was under the program “Turismo at Negosyo Dulot ng Ingat Kalikasan or TANDIKAN of Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc.
Bayong is expected to be in demand in the City in the coming months due to the implementation of plastic banning or single use plastic campaign. This livelihood training is also beneficial to the indigenous community like the Tagbanua that can supply these products.
“Layunin nito na maipasa at mapataas ang kamalayan ng mga kabataan sa bahagi ng kanilang kultura, gaya ng pag-gawa ng katutubong basket,” Tandikan Project Officer Edilberto Magpayo said.
The 18 Tagbanua participants are composed of 7 young women, 7 mothers and 4 elderly. Pandan is a common plant that can be seen around Cabayugan that’s why they chose the said materials for basket weaving. The seminar is in cooperation with Puerto Princesa Underground River and Tinig ng mga Katutubong Tagbanua sa Cabayugan (TIKCA).
