Pet fair and expo a new craze as a family bonding

An ultimate family day out for animal lovers and pet owners in Palawan was held at SM City Puerto Princesa spearhead by JCI Puerto Princesa Oil and dubbed as “MALLuPET na SHOW sa SM.” It was an exciting pet show held on July 14 (Sunday) from 10 AM to 7 PM at The Event Center and was supported by Palawan Daily News, Tatak ni Tatang Printing Services, Shakeys, Maambeng Travel and Tours and Pest Science Control Corporation.

With the aim to deliver the best and coolest pet show in Palawan it was a fresh concept by new JCI member and project chair Bernie Barbas, supported by 2019 Chapter President Rexlin Azarcon and local organization members and board of directors and officers.

The title “MALLuPET SHOW sa SM” and the list of engaging and interactive activities for the entire family were proposed by project co-chair Gilbert Ramoya and collectively supported by all JCI Puerto Princesa Oil members.

This activity is aligned to the Junior Chamber International (JCI) movement and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals No. 15, Life On Land.

“Urgent action must be taken to reduce the loss of natural habitats and biodiversity which are part of our common heritage and support global food and water security, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and peace and security,” the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal reads.

A whole day pet expo spur advocacy talks and awareness campaign about preservation, animal protection rights and welfare from Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), Katala Foundation Inc., and Palawan Animal Welfare Foundation, Inc.

Ms. Mary Chris Nierves from Katala Foundation continuously encouraged participants to help plant more trees to save the species of Cockatoo and Hornbill in Palawan.

Hundreds of mall-goers jam-packed and witnessed the animal-friendly show with Mascot appearances from Katala Foundation Inc. with Kataly and Lusi, Animal Storytelling with Moral Lesson for the kids with freebies and pet blessing for morning activities.

Exhibitors were divided into four categories in pet expo and presentation.

The first group was comprised of Palawan Betta Enthusiasts, Fish Hobbyist, Fish Trade and Palawan Aquascapers.

Palawan Aquascapers conducted a free aquariumscaping demonstration facilitated by Mark Locso, while Palawan Betta Enthusiasts organized the flare show with 70 entries of betta at the pet expo.

The second group consists of Palawan EXO, Organic Superworms, and Palawan Exotic Keepers. Mr. Jay Del Barrio presented to the audience about tips on proper care of acquiring and maintenance of exotic animals as pets. “it’s important to know what food they eat of our exotic pets” said by Mr. Del Barrio. They presented snakes, bearded dragon, organic worms, and sugar glider.

Palawan Pigeon Enthusiasts brought their pigeons and parakeets to amuse bird lovers. Mr. Jay Ocampo shared his knowledge in proper maintenance of keeping birds like a pigeon as a pet.

The last group that excites and entertain the animal’s lovers and enthusiasts comprised of the Palawan Pet Lovers with rabbits and hamster, and Mharcky’s Cavy with a Guinea pig, and lap dog pets were ramp by dog owners and shared to the audience their best bonding moments.

Ms. Anabelle Velasco of IJ’s Fur-Ever Pet Shop from Brookes Point Palawan shared tips on proper care and grooming of imported rabbits.

The much-awaited exotic and show type presentation of American bulldog “bullies” was presented by Mark Daniel Borja of Exotic Borja Bullies (EBB), it keep the crowd in silence and became attentive as five bullies were taken out of the cage one by one and ramp on stage with their handler.

Mr. Borja shared his best bonding moments experiences with his pets, and told the crowd of misconceptions about bullies in keeping them as pet. “We should not get scared of how bullies look and their physical appearance because they are the most caring, gentle and loving pets we can have.”

After the presentation, audience were got a chance to take photos with beasts but strictly with assistance from Mr. Borja and handlers.

Having family pets is common to many households today. Some pets are even considered as part of the family because of the joy they bring to their home and their pet parents.
